Lions, Tigers and Bears Oh My!

Last weekend we took Bonnie to the Colorado Wildlife Sanctuary since it was such a beautiful spring day. The Sanctuary houses rescued and abused animals and allows them to live out the rest of their lives in peace. Mostly, they have lions, tigers and bears. For whatever reason there are a lot of folks out there that think they can keep these animals as pets in their homes. The really cool thing at the Sanctuary is that you walk along a suspended bridge which allows you to look at all the animals without disturbing them too much.

Unlike the zoo, all of the animals have acres and acres of land to roam which in turn makes them so much more comfortable and relaxed.

One of the really cool things we got to see was the alpha male wolf eating a piece of meat and all of the other wolfs acting very submissive in order to get a taste.

The newest additions to the Sanctuary are 25 lions who were rescued from a Bolivian circus. The Sanctuary built a structure to house the lions until they could get acclimated to their new surroundings. Before we even got close to the structure we could hear the lions roaring at each other. We were lucky enough to get to hear the roaring in person - it sure is loud! At one point 3 females were growling and roaring at one male who was in an adjacent enclosure. Definitely not something you see at the zoo!

Bonnie really didn't care much about the animals but loved running around. There was really no one around so she had free reign which she definitely took advantage of. She also thought that her kitty would like to live with the lions since she tried to push kitty through the opening on the bridge. Poor kitty begged for mercy and luckily was saved from a sure death.
