Striving for Zero Waste

Since our HOA fees pay for recycling, we've made a real effort over the past few weeks to recycle everything we can. At first it started slow but now we're filling up both recycling bins and have only had half a bag of trash each week.

In addition to recycling we're trying our hand at composting too. We bought this little composting bin at the Container Store and so far so good.

Here are some other changes we've made over the past few weeks so that we're more eco friendly.

1. We started buying Seventh Generation detergent which claims that if every American household replaced one box of their regular detergent with Seventh Generation's vegetable-based detergent, over 96,000 barrels of oil would be saved - enough to heat and cool 5,500 homes for 1 year. The detergent works great so I highly recommend you make the switch!

2. When we go out to eat we've stopped getting lids and straws for our drinks. Also, we're down to one napkin a piece, unless it's super messy and then you get one more!

3. We made the switch to CFL bulbs.

4. We have solar powered walkway lights outside, which believe it or not provide quite a lot of light at night!

It's a slow process to be completely eco friendly but adding a little bit at a time is easy to do!
