A long standing childhood dream of mine was realized over the July 4th week. For as long as I can remember I've loved Anne of Green Gables and have always dreamed of going to Prince Edward Island to see where Anne grew up. Last winter I threw out the idea to my mom and my cousin, who are both big fans of Anne of Green Gables, and pretty soon we had a place booked and were well on our way to Canada!
The journey to Canada was just that - a journey. The plan was to fly to Halifax where we would meet up with my mom and then drive the 5 hours to Prince Edward Island the next day. Through a few delays and missing baggage we made it to Halifax but my mom was stuck in Atlanta because of some bad weather. We took the opportunity to explore Halifax and get used to the 3 hour time difference. The next day my mom made it along with our baggage, which for some reason had spent some time in Newark before making its way to Canada. We finally headed up to Prince Edward Island and met up with the rest of the family.
The house we rented was amazing! It was located on Howe Bay which was perfect for all the little girls we had in the house. There was a huge backyard which the girls took advantage of. By far the best part were the sandbars that appeared during low tide. The owners had a canoe for us to use to get to the sandbars which we definitely took advantage of.
My cousin Jenny has 3 girls who are a little bit older than Bonnie but that didn't stop them from having a blast together.
We spent some time driving around just taking in the beautiful scenery which also allowed us to let Bonnie get some quiet nap time. Prince Edward Island is known for its red dirt and amazing wildflowers and it did not disappoint!
The highlight was our trip to Cavendish to see the home used as inspiration for Anne of Green Gables. The grounds were absolutely gorgeous with lots of flowers including peonies, which are my absolute favorite!
We toured the house and then walked through the Haunted Trail.
July 4th was a beautiful but warm day so we headed to the beach. All the girls had a blast in the sand and the water.
There was a sandbar that we hung out on and Bonnie had fun destroying everyone's sand castles and throwing sand all over herself. But when it was time for a nap it was time for a nap...
We headed back to Halifax on Friday but stopped for lunch and a little last minute shopping in Charlottetown, where we had some of Canada's best ice cream. It was yummy that's for sure!
We had such a great time hanging out with all the cousins, aunts and uncles. We can't wait to get together again soon!
