We spent last weekend at a cabin in the mountains to celebrate my birthday. The cabin was completely secluded with no phone or Internet access which was really nice.
It was quite an adventure to find this place. From the main road it was about 25 miles on a number of dirt roads. The directions we were given included things like "turn left at the group of mailboxes" and "turn right after the property with the white fence." Once we finally found it, it was totally worth it because the views were amazing.
I had been half jokingly half seriously worried about bears being that we were so far in the middle of nowhere. My fears were not calmed when the first thing we saw when we entered the cabin was a note from the owner warning us about a bear sighting down the road. Oh great!
Despite being fairly terrified about bears and other mountain wildlife, we managed to spend some time on the large porch. They had a porch swing which Bonnie thought was just too much fun.
On Saturday we ventured out to check out some of the local attractions. The Royal Gorge bridge was actually pretty close to where we were staying (only 5 miles from the main road) so we decided to see what it was all about. Matt claimed that he was ok with walking across the bridge despite his fear of heights but that quickly turned out not to be true.
The bridge is a high suspension bridge and it was quite windy so you can imagine why Matt wasn't too excited about walking across it. Heights don't usually bother me but I have to admit that the constant swaying of the bridge mixed with the rickety wooden boards that you could see through to the bottom of the gorge (think Indiana Jones in the Temple of Doom) was almost too much for me as well. Matt almost made it halfway but then insisted on taking Bonnie back to safety with him. I didn't go much further but ended up getting some really cool pictures.
It was definitely a LONG way down! Matt insisted that we drive across the bridge which I thought was a bad idea given its rickety-ness but we did and survived! I guess that is one more thing to check off the list.
After the Royal Gorge bridge we headed towards Canon City to check out all the prisons. Sounds weird but we were pretty interested in seeing all 3 prisons that the small town had to offer. The federal super max prison is there which houses all the famous bombers - the Unabomber, the Atlanta Olympic bomber, the shoe bomber, the underwear bomber, the Oklahoma City bombers, and the 9/11 terrorists. We also saw the Colorado state super max prison which I'm sure houses it's own share of not so nice people. Finally, there is the old super max which looks like something straight out of The Shawshank Redemption. Attached to it was a prison museum which was previously used as the women's prison. It was actually a really interesting museum.
Bonnie finally perfected sitting up last weekend. Who would of thought she would learn to crawl, pull up and stand all before she could sit?
Bonnie actually did a really great job since it was her first adventure away from home. We took her pack 'n play for her to sleep in and she had no problems. She wasn't real excited about spending so much time in the car but ended up sleeping most of the time so it was all ok. All in all it was a great birthday celebration!
