After a morning filled with beach and pool time we went back to figure out something to do in the afternoon I got one of the best calls ever...a job! After Matt and I made a round of calls to share the news we decided to go on a hike in a nearby town. The reason we chose this particular hike was because there was a waterfall, Waimea Falls, at the end of the trail and the entire trail is a botanical garden, which you know I loved!
Waimea Falls.
After a particularly exciting day we shared a particularly fancy drink at dinner.
On Tuesday we got almost attacked and then stalked by a crab that was apparently confused and lost.
Wednesday was our last day and so we headed down to Honolulu to spend the day before catching our flight that evening. Matt really wanted to go to Pearl Harbor so we got up extra early to make sure we got there in enough time to get a ticket. We ended up getting there about 8am only to find out the earliest we could take the tour was 12pm! We opted to walk around and take some pictures instead of sticking around.
This was a one man suicide bomber called Kaiten which means "an immediate and sudden change in the course of events" - I'll say!!
After we discovered Pearl Harbor was out of the question we decided to treat ourselves to a truly unique experience - submarine ride in the Pacific! This is a picture of Waikiki from the Hilton Hawaiian Village, which is a really amazing place full of all kinds of plants and animals.
From the dock we boarded a boat that took us out to the submarine. I made sure to take extra Dramamine for this adventure and felt fine most of the time as long as I didn't look out the windows of the boat. Boarding the submarine was an interesting experience, especially wearing a skirt! We got to look out of a huge window and had plenty of room to move around. We thought it was especially funny when we got ready to take off and the captain rang the bell and said "Dive! Dive! Dive!"
We were taken all along the ocean floor to see some natural and human placed reefs. The water was really clear and we were able to see lots of fish.
This is a pufferfish we saw and immediately named Spike.
There were two sunken planes that now serve as reefs.
Matt and I joked that in a 24 hour period we were 109ft below sea level and then 30,000ft above sea level.
There were quite a few sea turtles taking naps and there is one in the middle of this structure.
A sea turtle that swam right past our window!
We had an amazing time on the submarine ride and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a unique experience in Hawaii. It was really interesting watching our clothes change color the deeper we went down. Overall we had a really amazing time in Hawaii and are even talking about going back in a few years. I think next time we'll head to Maui and give that a try!
